Scope People in the public eye consists of politicians, athletes, celebrities and other individuals who are famous. For our presentation we will be concentrating on celebrities and whether they should expect their privacy to be respected by the media. Media comes in various forms, with the more common ones being newspapers, tabloids, radio, paparazzi, internet, social media and many more. A conflict of rights? Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights stated that every person has the â€Å"right to respect for his private and family life. His home and his correspondence†. However, it contradicts with Article 10 of the same Act that states that everyone has the right to freedom of expression. The exercise of these freedoms†¦show more content†¦If a use of a public figure’s photo is use in a commercial, the advertisers ought to ensure it respects the person’s publicity and privacy rights before publishing it (publicdomainsherpa.com, 2008). Nobody will be happy if their privacy is intruded by force, and invasion of privacy will have high chances of causing fatal consequences, as seen in the famous case of Princess Diana’s death. Living as a public figure has violated her privacy (Woiceshyn, 1999). She wanted to get rid of the media because she wanted her own privacy with her loved ones, and the paparazzi tried to take a pho to of her with Dodi Fayed and chased her car down in the Paris tunnel that leads to the deadly crash (Woicheshyn, 1999). It is the unethical deeds of the media that cause the death of one of the most loved and respected public figure. According to Westwood (2010), celebrities do deserve some level of privacy, but they should not take advantage of this right to manipulate how the media portray them. Instead of detailing about the celebrities’ negative habits and unpleasant photos, the media ought to report on their positive side to alleviate the stress of the celebrities from being followed so often.
